Why Use Recycled Furniture

The Scheme undertook 1553 furniture deliveries to clients in the year ended March 2010 - an increase of nearly 140% as compared with 2003-2004. However, we have remained quite static in the last two years. Similarly, collections have remained pretty static in the last two years, with a recent very slight rise to 1388 .There were,  however,3767 visitors in 2009 -2010 - a rise of over 18% over the two-year period  2008-2010.  People are clearly keen to buy, but our supply of good quality furniture is insufficient to meet their needs.

The amount of waste recycled or composted has increased, and accounted for 34.5 per cent of household waste in 2007-8.  There has been a year on year decrease in the  amount of non-recycled waste per person over the last six years. It is now at the lowest level since estimates were first made in 1983-4 - most of this goes to landfill”.
(Defra  August  2009)

Despite the reduction in non-recyled waste we still face a serious problem as to how we dispose of it. Landfilling the waste by burying it in holes in the ground is becoming more difficult in the South East as we run out of space. In Richmond upon Thames our waste is transported to a landfill site in Bedfordshire. There are also environmental problems as rotting waste creates methane - a powerful greenhouse gas, and can produce leachate (a poisonous liquid).

We cannot sustain our current throw-away lifestyle and need to reassess what we do with our waste. It is estimated that up to 1,000 tones of furniture may be thrown away each year in Richmond upon Thames. Beds, chairs, tables and sofas in clean and good condition could all be reused, thereby reducing pollution and improving the quality of life for people on low incomes.

If you have any furniture in good condition please contact us to see if we can use it.
